What can I expect in Organic Chemistry?

Organic chemistry starts off by explaining how to take the elements from the periodic table and put them together to build a molecule. Once you learn how to put them together, you then learn about how they look in 3-D (See Simplifying Stereochemistry – Part 1 and Part 2) rather than the 2-D structures that we typically see.

From here, you then move on to how these molecules interact with each other, which are known as chemical reactions.

Here are some of key terms that you will see in your organic chemistry class:

  • Bonding
  • Octet Rule
  • Functional Groups
  • Chemical structure
  • Conformation
  • Resonance
  • Chirality
  • Stereochemistry
  • Functional Groups
  • Reactions

Here is a good place to start!

The best advice I can give you…

The first semester of organic chemistry is teaching you the basics of building molecules.  It is getting you familiar with seeing and drawing organic molecules.

The key behind understanding organic chemistry is that it revolves around functional groups; they are the most important factor in building molecules.

What about the second semester of organic chemistry?
